Why Tell Stories?
Why not simply read a story book? If you tell a story there is an immediacy and intimacy that you don’t get from having a book between you and your listener. Both the teller and the listener are creating the story together in your mind’s eye’s, there is no other author involved. We are hard-wired for stories. We constantly tell each other stories to make meaning of our world. We tell stories to understand ourselves, to connect with others, to let them know what makes us tick. We tell stories to laugh, cry, question, guess, plan, think and be moved together. And so do our children. Through creating a story space at home you are building a truly intimate and creative space in which you can share this exciting journey of learning and exploration with your children. The more you tell the more you will want to tell and the more you will find opportunities to use stories to explain, inform, change mood, even discipline!
