Storytelling and Transition workshop for year 6

Article Image

A one-day workshop focusing on the themes of transition, moving forwards with excitement and looking back with affection.

The vehicle is an old African tale, Ogalussa, which explores the concepts of memory, change, loss and transition. The story serves as a focus and as a framework for pupils to creatively and actively learn from the past and imagine and plan for their best future

Children will :
Listen to stories and think about the qualities and attributes they have that are like the characters.
Learn how to imagine what they want and plan how to get there using a story map
Make a memory stick from the past and the future
Create resources to take with them on their journey

Transitions (Year 6)
A one-day workshop for the summer term focussing on the themes of transition, moving forwards with excitement and looking back with affection. The vehicle is an old African tale, Ogalussa, which explores the concepts of memory, change, loss and transition. The story serves as a focus and as a framework for pupils to safely explore their fears and anticipations of leaving this school and going on to the next.

Second World War (Year 5/6)
A two hour participatory programme about the experience of a young girl, Jean, who has been evacuated to Filey in North Yorkshire. Pupils take part as fellow evacuees who meet a German prisoner of war who, like them, would also like to go home to his family. Pupils share in Jean’s ups and downs as she navigates through life away from home. They help her decide what to do about the escaped German prisoner…… Pupils explore the concepts of enemy/friend and right/wrong. They are asked to make difficult judgements whilst emotionally involved and perhaps gain insight into the complexity of relationships in wartime.

Big Stories for Little People

This is a one day workshop in which older pupils (year 5) work with younger pupils (year 2). Together they listen to Tall and Short Tales, Magical and Mystical Myths and Simply Silly Stories. They learn about rhythm, repetition, gesture and visualisation. The older pupils take on the role of facilitator for the younger pupils, developing their skills of questioning, thinking, clarifying, understanding, negotiation and cooperation. Together they use the skills they have been working on to create and tell their own stories.
